Gemstones We Love: Clear Quartz

Clear Quartz is one of my personal favorite gemstones!  Sometimes called Rock Crystal, it was used in times past to create crystals balls – the kind that fortune tellers would gaze into and tell you your future.

This gemstone has long been associated with magical properties, which its reputation is well deserved.

Wearing quartz has been said to promote balance, clarity, energy and for aiding the wearer with better overall health and spiritual well-being.  Clear Quartz is known as the stone of power and amplifies any energy or intention.

The hexagonal structured system of the crystal is at a cellular level, made up of silicon dioxide. Just as the human body is comprised of silicon dioxide, the earth’s crust consists of 12% silicon dioxide. Many believe that this similarity in cellular composition accounts for the interactive communication between gemstones like quartz and the human body.

It is also believed to open the mind and heart to higher guidance and is used often in conjunction with meditation.  Wearing this stone close to the body, it enhances the inner spirit as well as the outward appearance of the wearer.

Scientifically, Quartz is the chameleon of all gemstones.  Many types of geological factors contribute to its formation and gem quality quartz can be found in many colors & varieties due to traces of minerals that may form inside.  Many of these are known by names other than quartz, such as citrine, amethyst, chrysoprase, chalcedony and more.  All are silicates, the largest of all mineral groups.

Quartz measures a 7 on the Mohs scale which is just behind sapphires in terms of hardness.

Colorless quartz is called “Rock Crystal Quartz” and is often used in jewelry making because of its beautiful transparency.  One of the most abundant minerals in the world, clear quartz can develop in a wide range of environments and can be found on every continent. For this reason, quartz is tied into the lore of many ancient cultures from around the world. The term “quartz” comes from the Greek word for “ice.”

Apart from its mystical properties, quartz has proven scientific powers.  If you squeeze a crystal of quartz, it generates a tiny electric current.  Pressure applied to the surface of the crystals forces ions inside to move, changing the overall charge balance which essentially turns into a tiny battery.  An example of this process can be found in watch batteries.  The watch industry was transformed in the 1970s when quartz powered watches were discovered.  This process is known as the “piezoelectric” effect.  Quartz watches use small bits of cut quartz as oscillators to keep precise time.  Quartz is also used in frequency controls and electronic circuits.  It can also be found in cell phones, television receivers, computers and more.

Indeed this special stone is both a modern marvel and an ancient mystical gemstone.
